Motorcycle racer and four times Isle of Man TT winner. After he started motorcycle racing in 1961 on his road-going BSA Gold Star, he was spotted by Geoff Monty and raced a variety of lightweight machines. He gained greater success when he began to race Paul Dunstall's Norton twins which brought him his first Production TT win in 1968. The following year the string of wins and lap records was halted with a big crash on the IoM on the works 500 Triumph resulting in a serious shoulder injury. When recovered he joined the BSA-Triumph team and the new Triples winning many races and in the USA-UK Trans-Atlantic series beat the American star Cal Rayborn. In 1972 he won the Production TT and the F750 races. He retired later that year after a big crash at Mallory Park broke his pelvis into six pieces. Much admired by the fans and always in demand as guest of honour at shows and dinners, he finally passed away after a long illness. A celebration of his life was held at Bedford Crematorium.
