David Buckner (aka William Rodgers) was serving in the Civil War in the Shenandoah Valley of VA and he and Annie Caton were married in Winchester Frederick Co. VA., Aug. 4, 1865, according to Fred. Co. Mar. Book. 1853-1880, pg. 157. However, he used an alias, William Rodgers for the wedding.

Minister; Rev. N. Wilson.

David had used that alias when he enlisted in the Union Navy in exchange for his release from the Confederate P.O.W. Camp Douglas in Chicago, Illinois on Sept. 24, 1863. His reason for changing his name can only be speculated. Perhaps he felt that he had betrayed the confederacy in order to save himself and couldn’t bear to do so under his real name. The likelihood of his survival if he had stayed at Camp Douglas is very slim. In New York City, February 8, 1864 David left the Navy and enlisted as a Private in Company A of the 5th Regiment of the New York Cavalry until his discharge on July 19, 1865. His regiment was detailed to escort a dispatch bearer from Washington to General Sheridan in the Shenandoah Valley, making a seventy-five-mile march in twenty-two hours. The regiment was also an active participant in Sheridan's campaign in the Shenandoah Valley. David mustered out as Corporal with the company on July 18 1865 at Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia. Under his alias, William Rodgers, he married Annie Caton in Winchester on Aug. 4, 1865. Annie was 21 and from Strasburg, Virginia. David was 22. He must have met her at some point during his regiment’s service in the valley. Their first child was born in January of 1866 in Virginia which would indicate that Anna was already pregnant when the wed. David would take his wife and daughter back to North Carolina by 1869 and together they raised ten children, all Buckners.

David tried to collect a pension from both sides. It’s believed that he collected a CSA pension until someone reported him as a Confederate deserter and he lost his pension. He did however continue to collect a Union pension until his death. Two separate Union pension cards are on record. The first has the name of soldier as David Buckner, William Rodgers (alias), and the second card has
