Barbara was the daughter of Henry Hoy who died on September 16, 1858 in Marion Twp., Centre Co., PA. Henry Hoy's estate is File No. 1928, Centre Co., PA (will located in Will Book C, page 120). Distribution was made 23 Dec. 1861 to: ... "Barbara Grubb ($200 plus $39.00 int. 22 Sept. 1858 to 23 Dec. 1861)" The name is spelled "Grubb" in the estate papers, but the following receipt can also be found among the estate papers: "$100.00 Received Hoys Mills September 3rd 1859--of Jacob Hoy/Executor of Henry Hoy, late of Marion Tp Decd, the full sum of One hundred dollars Cash, it being part of a bequeath to Barbara Grubb, one of the heirs of Henry Hoy Dec. Signed: Jacob Grube for Barbara Grubb" [Barbara's son, Jacob, traveled to Centre Co. and his original signature, in its correct spelling (G-r-u-b-e), proves that Barbara's father was Henry.]

Barbara was born on April 16, 1798. This date has been listed as her birth date in Grube family records for generations and is confirmed by the age listed for her on her gravestone. Barbara's birth place is based on the fact that her father, Henry Hoy, owned land in Buffalo Twp., Northumberland [later Union] Co., PA from April 1797 to April 1811, as per the deed in Deed Book Volume Q, p. 335, Northumberland Co. Courthouse (Sunbury), PA. Both the 1800 and the 1810 censuses enumerate the Henry Hoy family in EAST Buffalo Twp. No baptismal record for Barbara has been located; however, baptismal records do exist for two older siblings of Barbara:
1. Catharina Heÿ, born January 9, 1795, baptized February 22, 1795 at the Altalaha Lutheran Church (Rehresburg, Tulpehocken Twp., Berks Co., PA). Her parents are listed as Henrich & Gertraut Heÿ and her baptismal sponsors were Peter & Maria Griechbaum.
2. John George Heÿ, born September 12, 1796, baptized at the Blue Mountain Church (near Strausstown, Upper Tulpehocken Twp., Berks Co., PA). His parents are listed as Henry & Gertude Heÿ and his baptismal sponsor was George Heÿ.
Barbara's birth followed in April 1798. The 1800 census reports 0 males under age 10 and 3 females under age 10. Assuming this enumeration is correct, then John George died young and another daughter had been born, perhaps after Barbara. Henry and presumably Gertraut are both living, as both 1 male and 1 female, age 26-44, are enumerated. The next proven birth for a child of Henry Hoy was John Hoy, born ca. 1804, 4 years after the 1800 census. It is assumed that Henry was remarried to Catherine by this time and Gertraut/Gertrude had died in/after 1800 in Northumberland (now Union) Co., PA and was buried there.

There is speculation regarding the maiden name of Mrs. Gertraut/Gertrude Hoy. The sponsors for Barbara's older sister were Peter & Maria Griechbaum. Sponsors (godparents) of children back then were almost always family members. Did a Gertraut/Gertrude Griechbaum exist? A Gertraut Griechbaum, single, served as the sponsor for the baptism of Johan George Griechbaum, born 2 June 1792, baptized 16 June 1792 at the Atolheo Altalaha Lutheran Church in Berks Co. (Johan George Griechbaum was the son of Adam and Regina Griechbaum.) There are over 100 baptismal records in the 1780s/1790s at the Altalaha Lutheran Church for Griechbaum (Grichbaum, Krichbaum, Kriechbaum, Kriegbaum, Krigbaum) family members. So it appears that Gertraut/Gertrude's maiden name was Griechbaum; however, definite proof has not yet been located.

Barbara was raised by her father and his second wife and accompanied the family move to Centre Co., PA in ca. 1811. There she met and married John Grube (a native of Bucks Co., PA) on June 30, 1814.

John and Barbara were the parents of nine children. All were born in Howard Twp., Centre Co., PA, except for the youngest, Joseph Grube, who was born in Jefferson Co., PA. The Grube family moved and settled in Young Twp. (now Bell Twp.), Jefferson Co., PA in 1833, purchasing a large tract of land that was later divided up among the Grube sons. (Note: Bell Twp. was created from Young Twp. in 1857.)

The nine Grube children are:
1. "Betsy" Elizabeth GRUBE Graffius
1817 – 1905
2. George GRUBE
1819 – 1911
3. David GRUBE
1820 – 1899
