Beatrice “Bea” Johnson passed away on December 26, 2004, surrounded by her family and grandchildren at Granada Care Home in Eureka at the age of 85.

She lived at her home alone after the death of her late husband, Leslie Edwin Johnson, who passed in 1976 and moved to a Adult Trailer Park in Arcata. Until about three years ago when her poor health could not allow her to live alone any longer she moved into Granada.

She was born in Racine, Wisconsin, on December 18th, 1919, to Richard and Anna Maurer. As a young adult, she worked at Sterns BBQ in the Hollywood area where she met her soon to be husband, Leslie Edwin Johnson, who was born in Eureka, CA. He worked at the MGM Studios nearby for the Ozzie & Harriet Show for many years. They had two children while living in L.A., Wayne and Marilyn.

In 1958, Les retired and they moved to Eureka to be close to Les’ mother. They bought a home in McKinleyville right on the Mad River, because they both loved to fish and look out at the ocean. They went claming and surf fishing and had a boat anchored in Trinidad Bay to fish for the “Big” salmon. Bea enjoyed the Redwoods and growing Rhododendrons. She enjoyed having friends over for “poker parties” and was an excellent cook.

Because of the cold weather (rumor has it) they has another daughter, Tami Bea in 1959. Bea then devoted the rest of her life to her family, always helping out with everything her family needed. She loved to shop, and would go to a zillion stores just to save a few dollars. Her granddaughters both worked at K-Mart in McKinleyville, so that was for sure one of her favorite places to shop - you know, “those blue-light specials”. Misty still works at K-Mart, and Tallie now works at Coast Central Credit Union in Eureka.

Bea worked temporarily at the Cottage Garden Nursery and also had various little jobs helping out other people needing things done for them. She worked as a room mother for her daughter, Tami, at Morris School. She also attended many functions with her daughter Marilyn, and her granddaughters Tallie and Misty. She dearly loved being around her grandchildren, Misty, Tallie, Corey and Adam, always getting them little gifts and doing things for them all the time. She had a big heart, a great laugh and was very proud of her family. Her son stayed in Hollywood and lives there to this day following his father’s footsteps working for the movie industry, currently on “My Wife & Kids”. Her daughters Marilyn, works at the Child Support Services of Humboldt County and Tami, works for Leonard Agnew, D.D.S. in Eureka, and also owns three Sherlock Mini-Storages along with her husband Dennis.

Every birthday Bea claimed to be “39” again and again, just like Jack Benny. She didn’t want to get old and leave her family. She did make it to her 85th birthday though, and until recently, Dementia and a variety of other age illnesses set in and her memory and motor skills began to fail. She died peacefully, and is now with her maker, dancing with the angels.

She is survived by her son, Wayne Johnson and his two children Sunny and Diana Sue of the Los Angeles area; her daughter, Marilyn Salazar and her twin daughters Tallie Salazar and Misty Blake, husband Eric and great granddaughter, Madison Ann Marie Blake of McKinleyville. She is also survived by her youngest daughter, Tami “Bea” Fitze, and her husband Dennis and their sons Corey and Adam Fitze of Hydesville. She also leaves numerous other relatives, brother Richard, sister Joan, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She will leave a big void in all our lives, for she was truly “one of a kind”.

A Viewing will be held on Wednesday December 29, 2004, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and 7:00 - 8:30 pm at Paul’s Chapel in Arcata.

A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday December 30, 2004, at 12:00 pm at Sunset Memorial Park in Eureka where she will be laid to rest next to her husband.

A memorial potluck gathering will be held following the burial at the home of Marilyn Salazar in McKinleyville. All friends are invited to attend.

Thank you to Granada Care Home for caring for our mother, who at times, was very difficult and for Dr. Dawson who watched over her. May she now rest in peace and happiness in God’s precious hands.

Arrangements are under the direction of Pierce Mortuary Chapels, Paul’s Chapel Arcata, CA.
