Lieutenant-Colonel John William Place.

He was the Commanding Officer of the 2nd Wing of the Glider Pilot Regiment of the 6th Airborne Division, that landed behind German lines during the D-Day landings in Normandy, on 6th June 1944.

He had previously been involved in the glider landings in Sicily, in July and August 1943.

He was also in charge of the 1st Airborne Division landing at Arnhem in September 1944.

Following the War, he was appointed Managing Director of Beechams Laboratories in Ireland.

The headstone notes that at the time of his death, he was living at "Mallard", Kill Lane, Foxrock, Co. Dublin.

He married Phyllis Whitehead in 1933, in Aldershot.
They had four children.

He subsequently married Catherine.
They had four children, one of whom died a day after birth.

His name is included in
