Jane Franks Schoonover Mittan, It reads: Death of a Pioneer: Mrs Jane
Mittan of Central City died March 2, 1909, she was born in Ohio August
28, 1830, and in 1847 married Andrew J(Jackson) Schoonover. In the
spring of 1852 they started for Iowa, which was then a state only five
years old. The trip was overland, which was the only mode of
transportation at that time, and the journey required about six weeks.
In June 1852 they reached Linn County Iowa and their first night went
into camp on or near the present site of Coe College. Cedar Rapids was
a small village at that time and had no rail road for some years
afterwards. The family settled in Buffalo Township and in 1864 Mr
Schoonover joined the Union Army, and was with General Sherman in the
March to the Sea. He died at Savannah, Georgia, Feb. 24, 1865. Jane
married W.R. Mittan, who still survives her, also four daughters and
three sons and a score or more grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Two aged brothers and other relatives to mourn her loss.
