A native of Henderson County, NC, he was a son of the late Hugh Vernon Blackwell, Sr. and Mary Margaret Henderson Blackwell, a retired textile employee, of the Baptist Faith and was a U.S. Navy Veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Lillie Oliver Blackwell of the home; a son, Hugh Vernon “H.V.” Blackwell III of Easley, SC; four daughters, Rhonda B. Blackwell and Mary Orr both of Hendersonville, NC, Kimberly B. Adams of Morganton, NC and Tammy L. Hendrix of Greer, SC; three sisters, Effie Bell Guice of Saluda, NC, Aurelia S. Ward of Zirconia, NC, Dorothy B. Belcher of Flat Rock, NC and Dooder M. Sexton of Saluda, NC; eleven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
He also was predeceased by his first wife, Kay Hyder Blackwell; a son, Douglas Richard Blackwell; three brothers, Johnnie Blackwell, Dean Blackwell and Rev. Jimmie Blackwell; and a sister, Amelia B. Ward.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday at The Wood Mortuary, conducted by Rev. Robbie Dodd. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memory Gardens.
Visitation will be held 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday at The Wood Mortuary.
The family is at the home of the sister-in-law, 4308 Burgess Court, Greer, SC.
