Generaloberst and Commander of the 12th Panzer Division. He joined the Prussian Army on 9/28/1909. He was transferred to Infantry Regiment 56 in 1911 and was promoted to Lieutenant on 3/20/1911. By the end of World War I he held the position of company commander. In 1931 he held a leading position in the secret German-Russian Tank-School in Kazan, Soviet Union. He was promoted to Oberstleutnant in 1934 and became commander of Panzer-Regiment 3. On 1/1/1937, he was put in charge of the 1st Panzerbrigade. He served on the Eastern Front where he commanded XXXXI Panzerkorps and Army Group A. He ended the war as the General Officer Commanding 5th Panzer Army, Western Front. He was held as a prisoner of war by the U.S. until 1948. His awards were Iron Cross 1st & 2nd Class (1914 & 1939), Wound Badge in Black, Anschluss Medal, Sudetenland Medal with Prague Castle Bar, Panzer Badge in Silver, Eastern Front Medal, Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords, German Cross in Gold, and Grand Officer of the Order of the Crown With Swords (Romania).
