Marvin Binns departed this Earth and went home to be with our Lord, his beloved wife Betty and their daughter Patricia, surrounded by family at his residence on the morning of December 21st.

Best known in recent years as the caring and involved President of the Arlington County's first organized fire company, the Cherrydale Volunteer Fire Department, 3900 Lee Highway, Arlington County, Virginia.

Marvin was the driving force of Cherrydale's 'Visit with Santa' Christmas parties, for which he shopped for more than 300 presents each year to be given to the children of the local Arlington communities, a labor of love he cherished for more than 36 years.

Marvin lovingly transformed into 'Santa Claus' for the traditional community Fire Engine arrival parade and the party in the fire station's second floor community hall, where tens of thousands of children through age 12 would sit on Santa's knee and chat with him while adoring parents would take photos of their little ones. Each child would receive a Christmas stocking filled with fruit and treats from Santa, then after dismounting from Santa's knee, each child would be allowed to select the toy of their desire from the array arranged on the remainder of the stage, before being returned to their loving parents.

Marvin remained with us long enough to witness the fruits of his labor at this year's Christmas party which was held on Sunday, December 20th. All told Marvin contributed 62 years of his life to the Cherrydale Volunteer Fire Department.

Beside his large, multi-generational family, Marvin leaves behind all the members of his expanded Cherrydale Volunteer Fire Department, which now numbers more than 50 active, dozens of administrative and numerous Life members, plus innumerable career officers and members of the Arlington County Fire Department, where he was their intra-departmental mail man for many years.

Marvin, a former United States Navy veteran of the Korean War, where he was a cook on board among other ships the destroyer USS Norfolk. Marvin will be inurned with his beloved wife Betty at Arlington National Cemetery sometime in 2016.
