Originally a worker in a packaging factory of Verblifa NV he escaped to England via Belium and France after the surrender of the Netherlands and later joined the parachute unit of the Prinses Irene Brigade. He left the Brigade to undergo training with the Special Operations Executive (SOE) to become an agent but went on to work for the Netherlands Bureau Bijzondere Opdrachten (The Office of Special Assignments). He died, along with all the crew and three other agents who were to be parachuted into the Netherlands, when their Hudson aircraft (FK790 of 161 Special Duties Squadron) was shot down by a German nightfighter and crashed into the IJsselmeer.
Unfortunately for all those aboard, the Germans had a counter intelligence operation, known as Das Englandspiel [The England Game] and knew the timings and locations of the drops of secret agents into the Netherlands. However, the intention in this case, as in previous ones, had been to catch the agents after parachuting and only to shoot down the delivery aircraft on its return to Britain.
Son of Bastiaan Verhoef and Hendrika Meijwaard.
Also commemorated on the Exmorra Propeller Monument, Friesland and the Verblifa-Monument, Krommenie, Zaanstad.
