According to the Waukegan Weekl Gazette (Waukegan IL) Saturday, May 8, 1875, page 3:
"Another Pioneer Gone.
An Thursday last Horatio Buell died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. O. H. Heath, on West St., in this city, at the advanced age of 78 years. Mr. Buell was one of the early settlers in the county, having located on the pleasantly situated farm now owned by L. N. Brown, Esq., a little west of Gurnee station, in the year 1841. For some years he was quite prominent in public affairs, and his name is still quite familiar to our early settlers. After living on his farm for six years he removed to Waukegan, and for ten years was engaged in mercantile purstits (sic), owning and occuying (sic) a store on the Dodge corner. He subsequently removed to Berlin, Wisconsin, and until about three years since, when a paralytic stroke warned him that he must retire from active business, was engaged in merchandising. More than fifty years of his life have been given to mercantile pursuits, during all of which he maintained his reputation as a careful, successful and honorable business man. For more than half a century he has borne the title and lived the life of a Christian, having been an active and consistent member of the Baptist Church for a period of fifty years. His wife, who is now 78 years of age survives whim, and is at present in remarkably good health for one so far advanced in years.
He has two chiildren (sic) residing in this city; one Mrs. O. H. Heath, and the other our worthy Sheriff, C. G. Buell, Esq."
