Obituary Jerome Ziering
(1924 - 2015)
Jerome "Jerry" Ziering, beloved husband, father, (great)grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, died Friday, December 4 at his home in Westport, Connecticut, surrounded by his three children. He was 91. Born on March 13, 1924 in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York, to the late Joseph Ziering and Anna Becker Ziering, he and his four siblings were raised in Newark, New Jersey. He graduated Westside High School, and then attended Weequaic High School (both in Newark) for five months, solely to study music and trumpet. He attended New York University, where he was honored as one of the only sophomores admitted to the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity, the world's oldest and largest secret national music fraternal society. Jerry completed his pre-Med college studies with High Honors at Rutgers University, Newark, New Jersey, and was accepted into The Chicago Medical School's inaugural class. He holds two Master's Degrees (Seton Hall University, Rutgers University), and was one dissertation shy of his Doctorate in Education. In February 1942, Jerry enlisted in the United States Army (Corporal, Army Air Corp). While at Kearns Army Base, Utah, Milton Berle's agent heard him play trumpet, and invited him to join the Army Show "WACARAVAN." He traveled the United States as WACARAVAN's trumpet soloist, entertained troops, recruited WACs and sold war bonds. An outstanding all-around trumpet player, singer and Master of Ceremonies, Jerry formed both the Paul Manning Orchestra, and the Jerry Ziering Orchestra, and both bands later included his son Peter on drums. Both were very successful on "Jewish hotel circuit" and New York/New Jersey events of all types. Jerry was also the first music mentor/teacher of Woody Shaw, a virtuoso trumpeter and jazz innovator. They shared a lifelong friendship. In addition to music, Jerry was a respected and beloved educator and administrator for almost 35 years, both in the Newark, and West Orange, New Jersey Public Schools. In 1987, he retired as Assistant Principal. Predeceased in April 2015 by Sondra "Sandy" Nudelman Ziering, his cherished wife of 58+ years, they raised their three children and lived in West Orange, New Jersey for over 50 years, before moving to Westport, Connecticut. He was an active member and Shofar blower of Temple Emanu-El, Livingston New Jersey, tireless UJA fundraiser, and proud member of Temple Israel, and Y's Men (both of Westport). For eight years, he served as an elected West Orange County Committeeman. He and his late wife relished time at the Westport Senior Center and were "Lifelong Learners" at Norwalk (Connecticut) Community College. In addition to his late wife Sandy, survivors include son Peter, son Dr. Thomas "Tom" (Alex Wieselman), daughter Allison (Michael Walmark), grandchildren Ethan and Eliza Walmark, Cody Ziering, Jarett Wieselman, Cali DeCaro (Anthony), great-granddaughter Hayden, and numerous (grand)nieces and (grand)nephews. Jerry's entire life revolved around his family. Services will be held on Monday, December 7, 11:00 AM, at the Bernheim Apter Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, 68 Old Short Hills Road, Livingston, New Jersey. Burial will immediately follow at Mt.
