He was wounded at (Second) Deep Bottom on August 16, 1864, and later resigned and was honorably discharged on January 26, 1865 by Special Order No 41, dated January 26, 1865. Born in 1835 he became the first commander of the Pap Williams G A R Post 15 of Ludington, Mason County, Michigan. Captain Gibbs later lived at the Michigan Veterans Home being listed from Kenton at the age of 82 in 1918 and died on Februady 1, 1923. He was buried in the Veteran's Home Cemetery in Grand Rapids, Michigan
