John, the son of Samuel E. Candy and May Candy of Langhorne Pennsylvania upon graduation from Neshaminy High School enlisted in the US Marine Corps on June 23, 1966 in Philadelphia. He arrived in Vietnam on October 3, 1968 where he was assigned for duty and served with Company E, 2d Battalion, 9th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of October Company E participated in several operations in northern Quang Tri Province and beginning on October 2 was under the OPCON of the 2d Battalion, 4th Marines during Operation SCOTLAND - NANKING. While in defense of Fire Support Base GURKA, northwest of the Khe Sanh Combat Base, on Oct 11 s aquad went on a daily water run when an explosion occurred. One of the patrol members grenade was accidently detonated, resulting in a Marine being wounded and PFC Candy being killed by fragmentation wounds.
