Funeral services for J. Edward Carlson of 14 Montrose Ave., Verona, formerly of Montclair, were held on Monday at the Arthur K. Brown, Inc. Home for Services in Montclair with the Rev. T. Laurence Wynne, pastor of Grace Presbyterian Church in Montclair, officiating. Members of Lodge 144 F&AM, Montclair, conducted a Masonic service on Sunday evening. Mr. Carlson, 61, died October 16 at Presbyterian Hospital, Newark.
A Verona resident for only 1 year, Mr. Carlson had lived all of his life in Montclair., where he was born. A graduate of Montclair High School he played varsity basketball for three years. and later played independently with the Grey Seals basketball team. During the 1929 and 1930 seasons he was a member of the Montclair YMCA basketball team, state and metropolitan champions at that time. As a member of the YMCA team, Mr. Carlson played in an international YMCA basketball tournament in Oak Park, Ill.
Husband of the late Mrs. Mildred Barlow Carlson, Mr. Carlson has worked as a salesman for 40 years. He belonged to the Grace Presbyterian Church and the Montclair Lodge 144, F&AM.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Henry Bauman of Clifton and Miss Cynthia A. Carlson of Washington, DC and three grandchildren.
