Frances Campbell Rolston was born June 11, 1936 in Staunton, Augusta County, Virginia, the youngest of three children born to Dr. Theron Rice Rolston and Margaret Friend Proctor. Cambell was her paternal grandmother's maiden name.

On June 12, 1965 at Fort Defiance, Virginia, Frances married Dr. Gerald Fisher Allen. The couple had three children. The family resided in Santa Fe, New Mexico during the late 1960's. In the later years of her life, Frances was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), a bone marrow disorder similar to leukemia. She was receiving treatment in Seattle, Washington, where her son Thomas lived.

Frances had undergone a bone marrow transplant shortly before her death on September 7, 1993 at the age of 57. Her remains were cremated and returned to Santa Fe to be scattered. She was survived by Gerald, her husband of 28 years, and their three children.
