Ichabod Chapin, He was the son of Benoni Chapin and Esther Lewis, b. 26 September, 1760, Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts. d. 16 May, 1843, Jericho, Chittenden County, Vermont. He married, 26 Jan. 1785,, Asenath Smith b. 1767, d. 15 April 1798, the Chapin genealogy says she was from Goshen, Connecticut (no further information)
"Ichabod Chapin learned the tanner's trade in Goshen Michigan (Goshen, Connecticut?) where he was brought up. He removed to Jericho, Vermont in 1786, where he carried on the tanner business in conjunction with farming, but later concentrated on only farming. He united with the Congregational Church at Jericho in middle life, and was always regarded as an upright and valuable member of society. He had a remarkable retentive memory, even to the last of his prolonged life, being able to repeat fifty hymns during the last year of his life. "
