Wanda Mae Ramsey Cordell, 89, a native of Western North Carolina and a long-term resident of West Asheville, made her journey to heaven on July 30, 2015.

A resident of Aston Park Health Care Center for more than 8 years, she quietly passed away after a period of declining health.

In life, Wanda was a loving mother, a friend to many, a cherished sister, and a woman of deep faith. After growing up in Marshall, NC, she met and married her beloved husband Carroll. They shared 53 loving years together including their final ones at Aston Park, before Carroll passed away in 2013.

Wanda worked at Beacon Mills for a period of time and after marrying Carroll, she focused her life on being a great homemaker, mother, and a caring spirit in her community.

She loved gospel music, and Wanda was the number one fan when her husband, Carroll, performed on the piano at nursing homes, churches, and other locations throughout the Asheville area. And when musical groups performed at Aston Park where she resided, she shared her joy with a big smile and by tapping her feet and clapping her hands.

Through life, Wanda always stayed busy – volunteering at local hospitals, trying a wide variety of crafts, caring for the children of family and friends, staying very active in many aspects of the church, cooking meals for others, and always ready with a helping hand, a reassuring word, or a simple act of kindness for anyone in need. She shared her love of God and her joy for life with everyone around her – always with a glowing smile and a caring heart. And she never seemed to have a bad day. Wanda always had a big smile on her face – and that smile and loving spirit were contagious to all who were around her.

Wanda is preceded in death by her husband, Carroll; her parents, Cora and Jeter Ramsey; and brothers and sisters, Vernon, Ruth, Elmer, Joyce, Harry, Gilbert Ray, Francis, and Joe.

Surviving are her son, Phil Cordell of Memphis, TN; stepson, Max Cordell and wife, Joan of Jacksonville, FL; three grandchildren and one great grandson; sister, Sandra Clark of Candler; brothers, Boyce Ramsey and Donnie Ramsey of Asheville; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and special family member, Jane Cordell.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 2 from 2:00-3:00 p.m. at Anders Rice Funeral Home in West Asheville, immediately followed by a funeral service at 3:00 p.m. in the Anders Rice Chapel. Pastor Josh Tietje will officiate.

Graveside services will be held at 10 AM Monday, August 3, 2015 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Wanda was a woman who enjoyed sharing her love of God, caring for friends and family, and bringing smiles to others. So in that spirit, the family requests that flowers and plants be in potted containers so that they can be shared for months to come with her many friends at Aston Park Health Care Center after the service. This lasting reminder of her love for her fellow residents and outstanding employees of Aston Park will surely make them smile. And Wanda will be smiling right back as she looks down from heaven.
