Age 6 she is listed in the England Census as Matilda Mascord born in Over Darwin. Although Matilda's marriage certificate identifies her father as James Mascord it appears that her parents were not married and possibly due to that reason she was assigned her mother's surname of Mascord when she arrived at the Neithrop Union Workhouse where she grew up with her mother Ann Mascord and siblings.
In 1863 Matilda Jeffs was bequeathed 500 pounds by her Uncle Charles Mascord who died in Michigan. His Will stated "I give and bequeath to my niece Matilda Jeffs, Daughter of my half sister Ann Mascord (deceased) said Niece now or lately residing at Upper Brailes, Warwickshire, England the sum of Five Hundred Dollars"
