Abel moved to Missouri with his son Thomas Inglefield Gregory in 1820 before Missouri became a state in 1821 after having moved from Virginia to Kentucky. His first wife was Elinder Sandifer and his second wife was Elizabeth Yancey a cousin of Alabama Senator, William Lownes Yancey. The family lived at Gregory Landing in Clark County, MO. Abel sold wood to boats on the Mississippi River. He had at least 10 children: Uriah Sandifer, Umbleton S. (served in War of 1812 at was at Battle of New Orleans), Burrell, Dulcena, Thomas Inglefield, Felix Grundy, Lucinda, Nancy, Polly, and William Smith. Abel and Elizabeth were buried at Gregory Landing in Clark County, MO. and it has been recorded that their graves were dug up by a farmer.

Abel 1772 Gregory is not buried in Bluff Springs Cemetery in Clark County. His burial site is unknown. Possibly in the old Gregory Cemetery in Lewis County, which was destroyed when US Highway 61 was built.
