Immigrated to U.S. from Germany in 1882 with his wife, Mary, and son, John. Departed Antwerp, Belgium, and arrived in New York, New York, on April 27, 1882, on the S.S. Helvetia. According to immigration records, he was a farmer in Germany.

He became a naturalized U.S. citizen on November 6, 1888. In Iowa, he was a railroad laborer in the 1880s and 1890s and then became a farmer, owning a farm by 1901, in Jefferson Township, Dubuque County, Iowa.

He died at his farm, which was located near Durango, Dubuque County, Iowa. His death certificate lists the place of death as Jefferson Township, Dubuque County, Iowa, where the farm was located.
