Daughter of James Buchanan and Mary "Mollie" Shannon. Catherine grew up on Locust Cove Creek, a tributary of the North Fork of the Holston, in southwest Virginia. Her husband Isaac Spratt, son of John Spratt and Mary Patrick, grew up nearby, and they were married on 10/6/1808 in Washington County, Virginia. Their first child was born in Virginia, then they moved to Ohio for a few years, where their next two children were born. They were back in southwest Virginia before 1820, then they finally settled in what's now Gilbert, Mingo County, West Virginia by 1824.

My grandfather Stafford, born at Gilbert in 1883, wrote of "Uncle Alex Trent's house and store on the piece of land between the river and Gilbert Creek. This was where Isaac and Catherine Spratt, my great-grandfather and great-grandmother, lived before I was born. To go up either the river or Gilbert Creek, you had to cross the river at the ford exactly opposite this house."

Their children were:
- Mary Ann Spratt, married Charles Mounts
- Levisa Spratt, married John Stafford
- John W. Spratt, married Mary Jane Peery
- Jane Spratt, married Francis Scott Browning
- Margaret Spratt, married Henry Ellis
- James Spratt, married Nancy Steele
- Amanda Spratt, married Augustus LeCompte
- Flora Spratt, married Lloyd B. Ellis
- Alexander Spratt, married Lydia Matilda Rogers
- Kesiah Spratt, married Henry Buchanan
- Arminta Spratt
- Catherine Spratt, married William A. Steele
