Dr. Timothy Carter received his medical training from his father-in-law, Dr. James Freeland, a surgeon in the Revolutionary War. Dr. Timothy moved his family to Bethel, where he was the first doctor in town. The farm he settled on has been in the Carter family for seven generations. His first wife was Frances "Fanny" Freeland. She died in 1815 and he married Lydia Russell.
