Roy Fernie was born at Ancon in the Panama Canal Zone on Jan 20, 1922, where his father owned a steamship company. He spent most of his school years in England with his grandparents. He had an excellent ear for harmony and learned to play both the accordion and piano by ear. He painted, wrote science fiction stories, directed stage plays and was a superb actor. His abilities were so diverse they seemed to include almost everything but business, which is what his father wanted him to study. But his greatest ambition was always to be a doctor.
When WWII broke out, he joined the Royal Air Force. He dropped out when he became ill. He then emigrated to the USA and again joined the Armed Services. When the war ended he became a US citizen and settled in St Louis.
He returned to the Panama Canal Zone in the 50's to visit his parents, and heard about the Baha'i Faith after meeting his soon-to-be wife, Elena Maria Marsella. They became pioneers shortly afterwards in the Gilbert and Ellice Islands, South Pacific, for which his father disinherited him. After many years there making friends and sharing the Baha'i Faith, the government and religious clergy worked to get the couple deported. They then went to Hawaii where Roy passed away in 1964.
