Alvin James Blankenship, 87, of the Pensacola community in Yancey County, went to join his wife in the presence of the Lord on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007, at his home. A lifelong resident of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Crate and Maggie Ray Blankenship, and the husband of 66 years of Lucille Arrowood Blankenship, who passed away in November 2006. He was also preceded in death by six sisters, a brother, a daughter-in-law, Vinita Blankenship, and a son-in-law, J.M. Whitehead.
Surviving are his children, Charles Blankenship and wife, Eloise, of Leicester, Govan Blankenship and wife, Norma Jean, of Marshall, Kathleen Whitehead, of Pensacola, Carl Blankenship, of Pensacola, Bernice McMahan and husband, Jim, of Mars Hill, and Maxine Scott and husband, Frank, of Red Hill; six grandchildren, Ronnie Whitehead, Kevin Blankenship, Sherry Craine, Jamie Whitehead, Malena Robinson and Kim Scott; nine great-great-grandchildren, Kenneth, Megan, Nicole, Jonathan, J.M., Dakota, Kaleb, Tyler and Garrett.
The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. The Revs. Philip Garland and Stanley McMahan will officiate. Burial will be in Garrett Ray Cemetery.
