Frieda Heywood Massara passed away April 25, 2006, at her home in Rio Rancho after a short illness. She had lived in New Mexico since June of 1975.
She was the daughter of Frances and Phila Hill Heywood and was born in Groton, Tompkins County, N.Y., on Jan. 28, 1912. She was educated in Groton schools, graduated in 1934 from SUNY at Potsdam, N.Y., and received a BS degree from William Paterson College in Paterson, N.J., in 1955. She married Joseph J. Massara on March 20, 1937.
Frieda spent the greater part of her life teaching school. Her interests and hobbies have been mainly in genealogy. She published two family genealogical books. She held many offices in lineage societies such as Daughters of the American Colonists, Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of Founders and Patriots, The Huguenot Society, Colonial Dames of the XVII Century, First Families of Massachusetts, New England Women, Descendents of Colonial Wars, Magna Charta, The Sovereign Colonial Society of Americans of Royal Descent, The Plantagenet Society, Women Descendents of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery
Company, and the Colonial Order of the Crown. She was a member of Albuquerque Genealogical Society and the founding president of the Sandia Doll Club.
She is survived by her two children: Heywood C. Massara and his wife Carolyn of Brandon, Fla., and Virginia-Kay Massara of Tijeras, N.M.; four grandchildren: James Massara of Norcross, Ga.; Tamne Robinson and her husband Brad of Tijeras, N.M.; Tara Robinson Rodriguez and her husband, Daniel of Fayetteville, N.C.; and Ty Austin Robinson of Rio Rancho; plus nine grandchildren: Joshua and Jonathon Massara of Colorado Springs; Ren and Carson Carson Rodriguez of Fayetteville, N.C.; and Jazmynn Carriaga, Jayde Trujillo, Justyce Robinson, Jaxyon Robinson and Jyara Robinson, all of Tijeras, N.M.
A memorial service will be held in her honor at Mesa View United Methodist Church, 4200 Meadowlark Lane, Rio Rancho, on May 6 at 11 a.m.
A graveside service will be held at White Lake Cemetery near Gran Quivira, N.M., on May 7, after which her ashes will be interred next to her husband's.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for remembrances in her name to The Albuquerque Genealogical Society, PO Box 25512, Albuquerque, NM 87125-0512 (please specify Endowment Fund) or to The Salvation Army, 4301 Bryn Mawr Drive NE, Albuquerque, NM 87107.
