Mary died from injuries when her dress caught fire after brushing against a wood burning stove. Mary was in the room alone, holding her new baby sister, Ollie Fay. She took precious time to walk to the bed and gently place the baby in a safe place before trying to put out the fire. The fire was too much for her and in she began to run. Her father hearing her screams followed her. Catching her, he ripped her clothing from here body but she died from the injuries two days later.

John Orr's hands were badly burned and after they healed the remained shaped in a loose clench.
