Birth name: Johann Rutsche
American name: John Ritsche

Father: Kilian Johann Rutsche (1830-1897)
Born: Saal, Butschwil, St Gallen, Switzerland

Mother: Maria Elisabetha Holenstein (1829-1909)
Born: Fischingen, Thurgau, Switzerland

Johann/John was born on his family's farm in the village of Butschwil in canton Saint Gallen in Switzerland. He was the 6th child of 10 children born to Kilian and Elisabetha.

He and his younger brother Kilian (1867-1910) emigrated to the USA together, arriving in New York on April 11, 1892 aboard the ship La Gascogne, departing from the port in Le Havre, France.

Upon arriving in New York, John traveled to Ohio where he stayed a mere 7 weeks before heading off to Dakota County, Minnesota where he worked as a farm laborer.

In 1894 he purchased 120 acres of wild land in Turtle Lake, Barron County, Wisconsin with the dream of owning and running his own farm. After clearing the land, he moved onto his farm in 1895.

On January 20, 1896 in Turtle Lake, John married Mary who emigrated from Bohemia. Her maiden name has not been confirmed as of yet; there are many entries with several different spellings, but I believe it to be something along the lines of Serwatka which is Bohemian. The marriage registry document has John's surname listed as Ritschy and Mary's maiden name as Serenatka, which to my understanding, is not a Bohemian surname.

To this union, 7 children were born. John lost his wife Mary on May 8, 1912 following the difficult childbirth of their 7th child, Paul, who was stillborn. John remained on the farm raising his family alone, never having remarried.
