Coye James, 74, retired Savannah Detective Lieutenant, Savannah Police Department, died Saturday, Apr. 2, 2005 at his residence. He was born in Lyons, Ga., and was a veteran of both the US Army and the US Navy, starting in 1951 as an MP for 2 years in the US Army. After his tour of Service, he went to the Ga State Prison for 2 years, he was the youngest person to be in charge of a Felon Squad at that time. He was retired from the Savannah Police Department, having served as a Detective in the Homicide Division, for over 28 years. He was the Chief Homicide Investigator for 24 years. He retired in 1985. He worked close to 700 Homicide Cases. He also worked as Head of Security for J. C. Penney's, for 28 years. He is survived by a son, Wendell Coye James, two daughters and a son in law, Marie Yaughn, and Jean Martinez and Nelson Martinez, from Bettendorf, Iowa; a sister, Oralene Morris, and six grandchildren, Chris Cuza, Bobby Cuza, Ashley and Garrett Yaughn, Wendell and Courtney James and one niece and two nephews. Visitation: 6-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home. Memorial Service: 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of the Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home, with J. D. Smith, Officiating. Interment will be Private. Remembrances: American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association. Hubert C.
