Charles is the son of Engelbert (born 1812) and Sophia (De Rijcke) (born April 10, 1818) Van Veerdeghem (married May 19, 1843.) Charles came to this country as a child in 1849 with his parents, twin brother Leonard Van Veerdeghem and older sister Stephania De Rijcke (born December 12, 1840; father's name not on birth record).

Charles' birth name was Van Veerdeghem, and after arrival in the U.S. his father, Engelbert, changed it to Van Verdegam and later, to Verdegam. The surname was often interchangeable as Verdegan and as Verdegam. Charles began using Verdegan primarily, and that is the spelling on his gravesite memorial monument. Charles and his family descendants are the only known descendants of Engelbert using Verdegan instead of Verdegam as their last name.

Charles and his first wife, Johanna (VandenLangenberg) had three children: Mathias (born 1876), Philomene (Minnie) (born 1878) and Angeline (born 1886). Charles and his second wife, Johanna (Van Lannen) had six children: Charles Jr. (born 1886), Albert (born 1888), John (born 1891), Mary Ann (born 1893), Anton (born 1895), and Harriet (born 1900).

Note: Year of birth is incorrect on the memorial monument. Charles Verdegan is the twin brother of Leonard Verdegam. Both were born September 24, 1847 in Westdorpe, Holland.
