Obituary Catholic Press 5th March 1931
Death of Mother Brendan.
ABLE HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATOR.
The death occurred on Thursday, 19th ult., at Mount St. Evin's Hospital, Melbourne, of the Mother Rectress, Mary Brendan Lynch. By her death the Sisters of Charity sustain a very great loss.
Mother M. Brendan recently was transferred from St.Vincent's Hospital, Toowoomba. His Grace the Archbishop of Brisbane (Most Rev. Dr. Duhig) and his Lordship the Bishop of Toowoomba (Right Rev. Dr. Byrne) sent telegrams of sympathy and regret to the Mother-General of the Congregation on hearing the sad news.
Her talents as an administrator and organiser were first displayed at St. Joseph's Hospital, Auburn, where her term in charge was marked by rapid progress in building and services. From Auburn she went to build up the new hospital at Toowoomba. There her remarkable energy and enterprise met with a success that earned for her the deep affection and esteem of people of every class and creed on the Darling Downs. It was there that her health began to give way.
The departed religious was a real spiritual daughter of Mother Mary Aikenhead, whose example she ever kept before her, and a typical member of her great Congregation, the first religious Community of women to come to Australia. She was one of those great nuns whose work in the magnificent hospitals of the Sisters of Charity is the pride of the Catholic people, and the admiration of the whole of the community.
Mother Mary Brendan, who was the daughter of the late Daniel and Mary Lynch, Clare, Ireland, had two sisters in the Congregation — Sister Mary St. Pierre, St. Vincent's Hospital, Sydney, and Sister Mary Veronica, Catholic. Ladies' College, East Melbourne. Mrs. P. F. Morris, Melbourne, is a sister, and Mr. James Lynch, Sydney, a brother.— E.I.P.
