Ben Sutton was born in Dobbs County, NC. His father was Benjamin Sutton and his mother was Sarah Hardy. He married three times, first to Mary Jane Hines, second to Eliza Herring and third to her sister, Elizabeth Herring. The first two wives bore him 21 children. He owned several thousand acres in eastern North Carolina.
His grave is on Alice Warters Road near the Lenoir/Wayne County line. There are two granddaughters' graves at the foot of his. No other markers are in the grave yard. The graves were vastly overgrown until some interested family members and the surrounding landowner took the initiative to clean the area. Members of the local Sons of Confederate Veterans camp, the Goldsboro Rifles, have helped erect memorial stones at the head of Benjamin's grave for his eight sons who served in the Confederate Army. A fence has been erected around the cemetery thanks to the generosity of several descendants. Thanks for your help.
