Phillip C. Johnson graduated from Petoskey High School in 1930. He married Fay Kurtz Johnson about 1936. Just before Fay was ready to give birth to their second son in 1938, word was sent to his sister Elva who was working downtown at the pie shop that her brother had died. She ran all the way home. It turned out that Phil was delivering grocery’s for Newman’s Grocery on the west side of Petoskey. The cause of death was a heart attack. It was a sad day for his father Otto, sister Elva Louise, and brother Richard Washington Johnson––all the extended family. It was especially difficult, as they had recently lost Hilda, wife to Otto, and mother to Richard and Elva. The first born son of Phillip and Fay, was far too young to know what had happened. After the second son was born, Fay and her two boys continued to live in Grandpa Otto Johnson’s home on Charlevoix Avenue near the Bear River. When Richard married Bessie Sutton from Boyne City, Fay and the boys moved to another home. Elva missed them dearly, as she and Fay were close––she was the sister she never had.
