Dessie Johnson Nyman was married to John Nyman. They lived in a lovely home at 915 Emmet Street in Petoskey, Michigan. (The Nyman Coal Company was nearly across the street. John was an executive with the Portland Cement Company. Dessie's mother, Katherine, also from Sweden, lived with them. The Nyman's stood up for Hilda Marie Johnson and Otto Johnson when the married in the year 1909 in Petoskey, Michigan. Dessie was the older sister of Otto Johnson. When Otto’s wife Hilda died, Dessie and her husband John, took Otto’s and Hilda’s daughter (Elva Johnson Seldon, a 13 year old) to Rosenthal’s at 404-406 Lake Street, to purchase clothes suitable for Hilda’s funeral. Then they helped their niece along the way as she grew up. A picture of this will be posted here at a later date.

Note: In attached obituary for Dessie’s mother, Catherina Johnson, her surviving brother in Petoskey is listed as “Arthur.” This writer believes the obituary was most likely incorrect. Dessie's only brother, the only one we ever knew, was our grandfather, Otto Johnson. Note also that Otto, is buried in the same plot as Dessie and his mother, Catherine Johnson. Otto is probably the brother who lived at 510 Charlevoix Avenue, Petoskey, Michigan. If not, It is also possible that Dessie had another brother named Arthur who lived at 510 Charlevoix Avenue with her son, Otto, and that somehow––Otto’s name was inadvertently left out of the obituary. We plan to check the City Directory of Petoskey to explore this further.
