Gustave was the son of Julius Ostrowski, a bergemeister* or mayor in Germany. The name was originally spelled Ostrowski (which is typically Polish). The story is that the family did not want to be thought of as Polish because they considered themselves German.

He was the brother of Richard Ostrowski of Germany whose son Ludwig/Louis (abt 1891) came to Philadelphia in 1910 on the ship Breslau. He indicated that he was born on Pasolovka, Russia and last lived in Laboda, Germany where his father Richard resided. Both places are non-existent but are probably phonetically similar to known places. According to descendants of Gustav, Louis disappeared one day shortly after arriving in Philadelphia and was never heard from again. This may be Louis. His death certificate stated that he was the son of Louis Ostrowski (which may be an error). Both Louis Ostrowski's were born in 1891, so they may be the same person.

Gustav immigrated on the ship 'Italia' to Philadelphia on May 3 1899 with the family of Johann Fiks (Ficks/Fix). Johann met him at the dock. He also lived with Johann's brother Martin and his wife Marie Ficks while waiting for the rest of his family to arrive. He stated that he was traveling with his sister- which would have to be Elizabeth Marks Fiks/Fix. If she was his sister, then she was married twice and Marks wasn't her maiden name when she married Johann Ficks in 1879. It is unclear whether he may have meant sister-in-law. Again, her maiden name would have to instead be Milke or Zielke even if one of Gustav's wives was her sister.

He was a wheelwright by trade. He declared that he was Polish and was born in Volhynia, Russia-Poland. His passenger manifest says he is from 'Marpafluka' which is probably Marjanowka (pronounced Marjan-oofka). Gustav's first wife Wilhelmina died in childbirth. He remarried in Volhynia. His second wife Emilia and children Alex, Emil, Mena and Carl came to Philadelphia on the ship Belgenland on June 4 1900. The family believed that Emilia was pregnant while traveling and the baby was born in Philadelphia and died. It must have been Carl, who actually was on the ship and died three weeks after the family arrived in Philadelphia. The family went to the same address as their father- 1128 Fletcher Street. This was the home of Martin and Marie Ficks. Gustave 'Ostrowski' of Germany was later naturalized on March 23 1915 in Pennsylvania- Eastern District.

Gustav died in St. Mary's Hospital after a serious accident involving an industrial saw in his wagon shop. In 1940 his widow Emile and children William (age 35, machinist) and Lydia (age 35, factory spinner) were living at the family home on 3304 Kipp Street in Ward 33.
