Rig Mechanic Collapses, Dies at Kennecott Mine

BINGHAM – A heavy duty mechanic died Friday about 10:15 a.m. while working on a drill rig on the rim of the Kennecott Copper Corp. open pit mine.

Alton (Mike) Angus, 48, 2809-300 East, South Salt Lake, was pronounced dead at the scene by a Kennecott doctor. It was not known whether he was electrocuted or died of a heart attack.

An employee of Western of Western Contracting Co., Mr. Angus was working with a crew stripping waste materials above the mine.

Tom Speit, project manager, said Mr. Angus was a mechanic on the electric-powered drill rig which bores multiples holes for blasting charges. He said the drill was on the R prime level, just one above the top level of the mine.

Mr. Angus was born Sept. 18, 1913, in Upalco, Duchesne County, a son of Delbert and Revella Knight Angus.

He was educated in the Bingham Canyon schools and has been a heavy duty mechanic all his adult life. He had been employed by Western Contracting approximately four years.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He married Vonda Stocks in July, 1933 [s/b 26 October 1934], in Heber City. They had two children. They were divorced in 1948. He married Mildred K. Wilding, June 3, 1951, in Salt Lake City.

Survivors include his mother, Draper; two sons and one daughter, Alton Roy, Salt Lake City, James Delbert and Mrs. Leonard (Barbara Kay) McMullen, both of Portland, Ore.; three stepchildren, Sgt. James Wilding, U. S. Marine Corps at Camp Lejuene, N.C.; Linda and Drew Wilding, Salt Lake City; two brothers and three sisters, Arthur Angus, Mineola, N.Y.; Jack Angus, Union; Mrs. Rodney (Ruth) Mahon, Draper; Mrs. James (Mary) Forman and Mrs. LaVell (Beth) Jensen, Salt Lake City, and four grandchildren.
