Huffs, from Virginia, were among the first white settlers in what is now Cocke County, Tenn. Records are incomplete, but most genealogy sources list John Huff's father as Joseph Huff. Joseph appears to have been a brother of American Revolutionary War veteran John Huff (1758-1843), a fur trapper who settled around 1785 among Cherokee Indians along "Long Creek" near what is now Del Rio.

Joseph Huff settled in the lower Cosby/Cosby Creek area where John married Nancy Catherine Allen around 1810. John became a prominent preacher in the Bogard/English Creek area.

Smoky Mountain Ancestral Quest lists 14 children for Rev. Huff and his wife.

Their daughter Mary "Polly" married William Clevenger, son of Elias Clevenger and Nancy Wood. William and Polly also raised a large family in Cocke County, with most of their children leaving the area. Son Elias raised a family in the White Pine (Jefferson Co.) area. Sons William Jr. and James moved to Missouri. William and Polly, late in life, may have joined some of their children in western states. Their death dates and burial sites are unknown.

Daughter Lucinda married James McMahan in Cocke County. She died at age 29. Her burial location is unknown.
