The Right Reverend Monsignor James Coyle, L.L.C., was born to Daniel Coyle and Mary Reilly in Abbeylara, County Longford, Ireland in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise. In the early 1860s, he immigrated to the United States with his parents settling in Cranston, Rhode Island.

In preparation for the priesthood, he would spend two years studying at St. Joseph College in Bardstown, Kentucky; one year at Christian Brothers LaSalle Academy in Providence, Rhode Island; two years at St. Laurent College in Montreal, Quebec and three and a half years at the Grand Seminary in Montreal. The Sacrament of Holy Orders was conferred upon him by Archbishop Edouard-Charles Fabre. Specific orders and dates are: tonsure, May 22, 1875; doorkeeper, reader exorcist and acolyte on December 18, 1875. He was ordained a deacon on May 27 1877 and a priest on December 22, 1877 for the Diocese of Providence.

Father Coyle's first assignment was to St. Francis Church in North Adams, Massachusetts as an assistant on January 19, 1878. It was a short assignment as he was transferred to St. Brigid's Parish in Millbury, Massachusetts in October of 1878. He was later assigned to the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul in Providence on February 11, 1880. In January 1885, the parish of Saint Joseph in Newport, Rhode Island was established and Monsignor Coyle was selected to be its first pastor on January 14th of that year. Eleven years later, he received his final assignment when named pastor of St. Mary's parish in Taunton, Mass. The University of Notre Dame conferred upon him an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 1910. He was named a domestic prelate on August 20, 1916 with investiture on October 1, 1916 by Pope Benedict XV thus receiving the highest honors a Roman Catholic priest, under a bishop, may receive. During his pastorate in Taunton, a new parish house and school were erected making St. Mary's one of the more prominent parishes in the diocese.

Monsignor Coyle's legacy is one of education. In 1911, he and the Holy Union Sisters opened St. Mary's High School. By 1930, the school could no longer accommodate further growth and was turning away students. Following the Monsignor's death, Bishop Cassidy announced that a Catholic high school for boys would be built on Summer Street and dedicated to the Monsignor.

Monsignor Coyle died in the St. Mary's rectory on June 20, 1931 and in 1933, Monsignor James Coyle High School admitted its first class.

Right Reverend William A. Hickey, Bishop of Providence, celebrated a solemn pontifical requiem mass and the Right Reverend James E. Cassidy, Auxiliary Bishop of Fall River, delivered the eulogy.
