A funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, Coal Valley, with The Reverend Richard Bresnahan officiating. Visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Trimble Funeral Home, Coal Valley, with a liturgy at 4:30 p.m. Burial was in Rock Island Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island. Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Coal Valley, was entrusted with the arrangements.
Art was born on December 5, 1911, in Cairo, Missouri, the son of Lay Gone and Martha Elizabeth Jackson Gravitt. He married Marie Kathryn Hinkel on April 1, 1933, in East Moline, Illinois. He was employed at the John Deere Harvester Works in East Moline for 37 years, retiring in 1971. He was a member of St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, Coal Valley, and the United Auto Workers.
Art enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and spending time with his large family.
He was survived by: his wife, Marie; five children, Janice Marie (Richard Dean) Seibert, Richard Lee (Patricia K.) Gravitt, Barbara Ann (Marvin Lee) Swanson, Marjorie Faye (Jerry Duane) Maddox, and Sandra Jean (Donald Lee Jr.) Metzner; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Coralie Taylor.
He was preceded in death by sons, Arthur Eugene "Gene" Gravitt and Michael Wayne "Mike" Gravitt.
