Wife of Leonardus "Leon" Johannes Herckenrath, Dutch Consul in charge of North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Juliette was a beautiful, young mulatto slave living in a home where Leon was staying. While visiting the family he contacted yellow fever and little Juliette, who was only nine years old was in charge of nursing and taking care of him during his illness. During this time Leon fell in love with her, bought her for $1,500.00 when she was fourteen years old and because of his wealth and social status in Charleston, was able to get "away with" marrying her, much to the horror of Charleston society. He fought a duel over her. They married August 15, 1823, when she was fourteen years old. When Leon found out his children could not attend school because of their black heritage, he took the entire family back to Holland where they lived happily on his large estate, "Geerbron" in Monster, South Holland. They had fifteen children, five of whom were born in Charleston, South Carolina. Leon and Juliette were a true love affair until the day they died.

Excerpt from the unpublished diary of Herman Sebastiaan de Fremery, which I own. He is a miner in California by this time.
