Mary Ann Devlin White German Smith was the daughter of John Devlin and Margaret McIntyre. For some reason her daughter Mary German Morris believed that Mary Ann was born in Pottstown. Another family member thought there were Devlin relatives in Centralia. Any connection there with the Devlin or McIntyre family is still unknown.

Mary was married three times. She was the mother of seven children. Her children with Thomas White were (all linked below):

1-Robert William White (1893-1930)
2-Hannah White Cooke (1896-1947)
3-Lena White Bowen (1898-1929)
4-Daniel Thomas White (1901-1964)

Her second husband was William George German. Her sister Elizabeth married Charles German, William's brother. Mary and William were married at 7:30 in the evening at the home of Rev. Alexander H. Lee on 216 Belgrade Street. Rev. Lee was pastor of Hancock Methodist Episcopal Church at 1217 North Hancock Street (now merged into New Vision United Methodist Church at another location). Mary's brother David was one of the witnesses. The children of Mary Devlin and William George German were:

5-Elizabeth Margarite 'Bessie' German Castle Davis (Jan 17 1906- Aug 15 2000 Phila) from Philadelphia birth record
6-Lillie German (1909-1909)
7-Mary Ann German Morris (June 22 1911- Aug 6 1991) This is a child she had with her first husband Edward Maloney~ Baby Boy Maloney. Edward was probably related to Mary's Aunt Elizabeth Maloney White.

Her third husband was Henry 'Harry' Smith and they apparently had no children. Mary died at age 62 from chronic heart problems. Due to her 'dementia precox' she had been living at the Philadelphia Hospital for Mental Diseases in Byberry (dementia precox is not like Alzheimers, it is now called schizophrenia).

Mary is buried with her daughter Lena White Bowen and Lena's baby boy. It is an unmarked plot right along side of the road. The plot is currently listed as being owned by Lena's husband Joseph Bowen, who died in 1944 and never transferred the deed. According to Holy Cross, any great-grandchild of Mary's may sign an affidavit of direct descendancy when purchasing a memorial and claim to be authorized to add a memorial marker (considered equally entitled since none of her children or grandchildren are living).

Note~We visited and were told that her unmarked grave was directly in front of Ernest J. Peters (along the road).
