WHITE - Suddenly, on July 5, James White, in his 69th year of his age. The relatives and friends of the family, also Roxborough Lodge no. 135, A.Y.M. [Ancient York Masons], are respectfully invited to attend the funeral, from his late residence, Flat Rock Locks, on Tuesday, the 8th inst, at 3 o'clock p.m. without further notice, to proceed to Heggy's Church.

[referring to 'Hagy's Church', which was the locals name for the former Roxborough Dutch Reformed Church, now Roxborough Presbyterian].

Note~Censuses indicate that he was born in 1805 or 1806, which conforms with the birth and baptism record that I found in Leicester. Additionally, the phrase "in his 69th year" would usually mean they thought he was 68 years old. But his age is not stated correctly even if they were using the birth year of 1805 given in his Masonic biography. At the time of his death he was actually about to turn 67 years of age the following month.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
James was the son of Thomas White and Sarah (Bolton?). He was christened on August 22, 1806 at St. Margaret's, Leicester, Leicester. There is a marriage record for Thomas White and Sarah Boulton in 1788 at Saint Mary's in Hinckley, Leicester, Leicester. There is a christening record for Sarah Boulton on April 3 1768 at Saint Mary's, Hinckley, Leicester, Leicester. This was previously believed to be that Sarah White. But further research does not seem to connect her with this family.
He was married to Catharine Marshall (born about 1812). She is possibly the daughter of John and Maria Marshal born on August 10 1810 and christened on September 21 1812 in Philadelphia. Her death record cannot be found, although several family trees have incorrectly claimed she was living in southern Maryland while still married to James. Her headstone indicates that she died in 1865.
James immigrated to Philadelphia at age nine on the merchant ship Bengal with his mother Sarah and brothers (?) Robert, Thomas, John, and Henry, arriving on May 17 1817. It appeared that his mother was traveling with just her five sons (although they weren't listed as such) and a female companion Ally Hanna. There was a Thomas White who arrived in Philadelphia four months later on September 17 1817 on the ship Telegraph from Liverpool. Perhaps he was their father. The most age appropriate possibility for Thomas White, father of James would be this Thomas buried in the former Second Presbyterian Churchyard. Or this Thomas who is also buried there (he died one year before the family arrived in Philadelphia without their father). There is only one other death record for a Thomas White born circa 1866, and he was from a Men's Incurable Ward and was buried in the 'Public Cemetery' (a potter's field, not likely for this family). James attended public school in Roxborough. He first worked at a textile manufacturing plant as a cotton hand mule spinner. He was inducted into freemasonry on May 16 1835. He was a 32nd degree Mason and Grand Worshipful Master of Roxborough Masonic Lodge in 1838. Robert White (possibly his brother?) was inducted the same year. Robert lived four houses away from James in 1840. Robert was born between 1780 and 1790 according to the census record. He was living with one male age 15-20; two males age 20-30; two females age 15-20; and one woman who was between 80 and 90 years old (perhaps his mother?). Apparently Robert was widowed. In any case, the family of James White is the only White family listed as residing in Roxborough just ten years later in 1850, although some Whites are listed in Manayunk. There are only two death records in Philadelphia that could be this man, one with no birth year given who died in 1850 here and one Robert of the appropriate age (born 1780-1790) here listed as being born in Ireland. The Robert White living in Manayunk would seem to be his brother who gave an incorrect age on the census. James could have had siblings born as early as 1785 based on his mother's age (James would have been born when his mother Sarah was about 39 years old). Robert of Manayunk was listed as a weaver (born abt 1778? Ireland) and married to Sarah (born abt 1785 England). They had a son Robert born in 1810, who also could have been the Robert who joined the Masons with James. Their death records cannot be located.
James was the father of eleven children. His four oldest sons served in the Civil War.
1-John Marshall White (1833- 4/21/1880) married Martha Hess Toy
2-Sarah White (About 1838)
3-James Marshall White (1841-after 1876) married Alice Hester Boyd
4-Robert White (1839-1861) died shortly after enlisting to fight in the Civil War
5-Joseph White (1843) married Amanda Reibel
6-Henry 'Harry' White (1844) married Anna Shuster
7-Elizabeth White (About 1845)
8-Mary Marshall White Britton (5/11/1848- 1/17/1906) married Edward E. Britton
9-William 'Whitey' White (1849) married Mary Carr/Kerr
10-Hiram White (1851) married Mary Jane Miller
11-Annie White Rousher (1853-1917) married Charles Rousher
(only four children were born as of the 1840 census- presumably John, Sarah, James, and Robert- although Robert was thought to be born in 1841 or 1842 according to other censuses)
James was the lock tender on the Manayunk Canal from about 1848-1873. His locks near Flat Rock Dam were known as 'White's Locks'. James resided at Domono Lane and River Road. It is said that the ruins of his lock tender house are still along the canal and now part of a park and trail. He drowned in 1873 after falling in one of the locks. His funeral was at Hagy's Church (the Dutch Reformed Church in Roxborough that is now Roxborough Presbyterian).
NOTE- No death record can be found for his son James M. White who briefly worked as lock tender with his father. He seemingly disappeared after the death of his only child Catherine in 1873 and his wife Alice in 1876. This could possibly be him since he was a 'stationary engineer' and may have gone to Oil City to participate in the oil drilling boon.
Two of James B. White's daughters, Sarah and Elizabeth, cannot be traced after the 1860 census. They were living with Francis Shafere and his wife Margaret. Mary and Anna were also residing with the Shaferes in 1860. Francis was a stone mason.
Additionally, three daughters of David and Hester McBride Howard were living with James and Catherine White in 1860- Rachel Howard, Hester Strang, and Elizabeth Howard (1857). In 1870 Hester and David lived next door to John (1807 NY) and Hannah McBride (1818 NJ). The relationship is not known at this time. A boarder Kate Wills, possibly related to Catharine Marshall White also lived in the home.
I previously believed (and had linked) this civil war veteran Robert J. White was his son. My discovery of the 1861 obituary of Robert White (whose funeral was held at his father's house in Flat Rock) dispelled that research. Curiously, no one in the James B. White family ever knew that his son died during the Civil War. The official masonic biography of James didn't include that fact.
