Born in the Homestead section of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Nunn attended West Virginia State and was a stand-out basketball player on a team that went 26–0 in his senior season. Nunn was elected to the West Virginia State University Sports Hall of Fame. Nunn was recruited by the Harlem Globetrotters, but chose instead to return home to Pittsburgh to work as a sportswriter at the Pittsburgh Courier. Nunn eventually became the sports editor and then managing editor. In 1970, Nunn became a scout for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Due to his knowledge of football programs at historically black colleges and universities from his time as a sports writer, Nunn recruited star players such as Mel Blount, John Stallworth, Donnie Shell, and Sam Davis, who played integral roles on the Steelers' four Super Bowl championship teams during the 1970s. Nunn died on May 6, 2014, at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, two weeks after suffering a stroke.
