Dorothea Mundhenke was born Amalia Dorothea Humke in Hummersen, Lippe (presently a district of Lügde, Germany), a daughter of Heinrich Georg Humke and Wilhelmina Amalia Ilsabein Algermissen.

On 16 August 1831, she became the second wife of Johann Friedrich Mundhenke of Hagen, Pyrmont (presently a district of Bad Pyrmont, Germany), and a stepmother of the seven surviving children of her husband's first marriage to Anna Catharina Elisabeth Reese.

Dorothea had three children with her husband, all born at the tollhouse known as Fischanger in Schieder (presently a district of Schieder-Schwalenberg, Germany) where the family lived until May 1847.

Dorothea Mundhenke came to Illinois in 1847 with her husband, her three children and several stepchildren. She was an early settler of Rock Run, Stephenson County, Illinois.

Johann Friedrich Mundhenke and Amalia Dorothea Humke were the parents of three children.

1. Luise Mundhenke, b. 10 July 1832 (m. Heinrich Bergmann).
2. Sophie Mundhenke, b. 17 June 1834 (m. Simon Schröder).
3. Carl Mundhenke, b. 18 May 1839 (m. Lavina Bomgardner and Nancy Jane Hutchison).

Gravesite Details

Although the grave marker gives a birth date of 2 February 1800 and a death date of 22 August 1872, examination of vital records reveals a birth date of 20 January 1800 and a death date of 13 August 1872.
