Rev. Joseph Balbach, age 92, of Grand Rapids, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on March 24, 2014. Joe served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II and then went on to teach music before graduating from Grand Rapids Baptist Seminary and serving as a pastor for churches in Grand Rapids, Sparta, Saginaw, Sault Ste Marie and Kent City.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Bobby and Bill Balbach, and by his sister, Sarah Hill.

Joe is survived by his wife, Esther Balbach; their children, Stephen and Mary Balbach, Carol and Ervin Goodenough, Benjamin Balbach, Priscilla and John Spoelstra; grandchildren (and great-grandchildren), Erich and Anne Balbach (Eli, Nola and Max), Sara and Brant Reilly (Lela and Estelle), Jack Goodenough, Heidi and Joshua Gilde (Andrew and Noah), Luke and Cheryl Goodenough, Andrew Goodenough, Johnny, Olivia, Ella and Joey Spoelstra; brother, Cornelius Balbach; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Lou Buffham, Barb and Joe Rathbun, Jim VanStensel; and many nieces and nephews.

A service of praise and thanksgiving for the life and testimony of Joseph Balbach will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at 11 AM at Berean Baptist Church, 1574 Coit NE.

Friends are invited to visit with his family on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Heritage Life Story Funeral Home - Van Strien Creston Chapel, 1833 Plainfield NE and on Saturday at church from 10 AM until the time of the service.
