Roman Catholic Cardinal. Born in present day Ukraine, Władysław Rubin received his education at the universities of Lviv, St. Joseph's in Beirut and the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Arrested and interned in a forced labor camp during the Second World War, upon his release he joined the Polish Army. Ordained priest in June 1946 in Beirut, Rubin assisted Polish refugees in Lebanon until 1949 and later across Italy till 1958. Rector of the Pontifical Polish College in Rome between 1959 and 1964, at the age of forty seven he was appointed auxiliary for the see Gniezno, Poland, and delegate of the latter's primate for the spiritual care of Polish expatriates. He received his episcopal consecration in Rome on November 29 that year. Appointed secretary general of the Synod of Bishops in 1967, Pope John Paul II created him cardinal priest with the title of Santa Maria in Via Lata in his first consistory of June 30, 1979. On June 27 of the following year, the Pope named him prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Oriental Churches. A lengthy illness led to his resignation in 1985 and ultimately to his death in 1990.
