Margaret was born in the village of Kathreinfeld, Banat, Austria-Hungary (Ravni Topolovak in Serbian). She was a Donuaswabian (ethnic Germans who settled and guarded the border of the Hapsburg empire). She immigrated in 1910 with her father Peter. He left her in New York city working as a maid for a Jewish family while he returned for her sister Helen. They are the only two know to have settled in the US. She married Frank Weiss in 1921. They had two daughters, Margaret Anna and Elsie Elizabeth.
