JOSEPH A. MANDA, III, DVM

Beloved veterinarian Joe Manda passed away on November 5 at home in Myrtle Beach, SC, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Yun Cui (Amy). Joe was born on January 17, 1952 in Orange, New Jersey. He was the only child of Caroline Barnes Manda and Joseph A. Manda, II, both of whom predeceased him.

His maternal grandfather was James T. Barnes, a famous golfer. Jim Barnes won the first PGA Championship ever played in 1916, and won the next one, played in 1919. Joe assisted the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine, Florida in creating a special J. T. Barnes exhibit which includes trophies, photos, and other memorabilia.

Joe excelled at academic and professional pursuits, obtaining several degrees and practicing all aspects of veterinary medicine in many locales. These are included for the FL or SC newspapers. Omit them for NJ paper: From 1990-1993 Dr. Manda was the Assistant Director at the Biotechnology Institute of Technology Transfer Research and Technology Park, Alachua, FL.

Following his move to Myrtle Beach in 2005, he worked at Ark Animal Hospital and Banfield Pet Hospital. He was a published in professional journals and presented at veterinary conferences. Dr Manda was member of the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science, American Animal Hospital Association, American Veterinary Medical Association, Veterinary Critical Care Society, and a Charter Member of both the American Veterinary Medical Law Association and the American Association of Veterinary Practice Management Consultants.

Dr. Joe had numerous academic accolades:
M.B.A., Hood College, School of Business, Frederick, MD, 1989;
Post-Doctoral Studies, Veterinary Oncology, University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI, 1983;
D.V.M., Universidad Nacional de Pedro Henriques Urena, Santo Domingo, D.R., 1981;
M.S., Animal Science/Toxicology, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ, 1979;
B.S., Pre-Veterinary Medicine, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, OK, 1978;
B.S., Secondary Education, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, OK, 1973.

In addition to his veterinary practice duties, Joe worked during national disasters since 2006 as a Veterinary Medical Officer with the Department of Homeland Security, including one month in Mississippi following Hurricane Katrina.

Dr. Manda will be remembered with appreciation and warm thoughts by the owners of many, many cats and dogs as the doctor who went the extra mile to care for them. He will be missed by his friends, colleagues, and family. A special thank you to the medical people and to the Hospice team who made his transition from this life to the next as comfortable as possible, and to his long-time friends Jean Reid and Doug Johnson.

Following cremation at Burroughs Funeral Home in Murrells Inlet, Joe was buried on December 13, 2013 alongside his parents in the family plot at Evergreen Cemetery in Basking Ridge, NJ.
