While growing up, she helped with household chores: carrying water from the well to the house, lighting a coal-oil lamp at night, helping with animals on the farm, and going with her mother to the creek on laundry day where they lit a fire under an iron tub, heating water from the creek to wash clothes on a rubbing board with homemade soap.
When Lavina was 14 years old, she attended Sunnyside Baptist Church where she met Charles M Meek. On 28 June 1930 they were married in Tulsa County, OK. In August, they moved to Mountain View, CA where Charles' parents and other of his family were living.
In mid 1931, Lavina and Charles bought a lot and hurriedly built
house before the arrival of their first baby, John Phillip Meek, born 26 December. Sadly, John Phillip was born with a hole in the valve to his heart, the common name for this heart condition at the time of his birth was a "blue baby". John died on 13 July 1932. Four more children were born.
Charles and Lavina were members of the Baptist Church at Mountain View – she served as Vice President of the Women's group – arranging programs for the women's meetings. Charles was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Lavina was a member of Eastern Star.
Charles and Lavina lived and raised their children at Mountain View. They bought land a short distance from Bayshore Highway and built two houses – the family lived in the front house and rented out the house in the back. Lavina enjoyed her role as a homemaker. She was a great cook and often fed her children at a regular meal time and kept dinners warm for Charles until late at night due to his work schedule. Lavina often found herself driving her own four and many of the neighborhood children to school events, Saturday afternoon movies, Sunday School and church services, scout meetings, swimming lessons, and wherever they needed to go. Shopping trips with her daughters was an especially fun time including lunch at the Kress' lunch counter in San Jose. As a homemaker, Lavina was devoted to her family.
In 1958, they moved to nearby Sunnyvale and later to Watsonville in 1963 and in 1974 to La Selva Beach, CA.
Charles died on 09 May 1980 at their home at La Selva Beach. Lavina stayed on at the same residence and died there on 10 March 1995. Charles and Lavina are buried in the mausoleum at Alta Mesa Cemetery, Palo Alto, Santa Clara County, CA.
