Dempsey Metcalf, 70, of Route 4, Penical Park, Weaverville, N.C., died in an Asheville hospital Sunday, February 2, 1975 after a brief illness.
He was a native of Tennessee and had lived in Buncombe County, N.C. for 30 years. He was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church and a retired lumberman. He was a son of the late George Daniel Metcalf and Lovada Hensley Metcalf.
He was survived by his wife, Ruby Phillips Metcalf; a daughter, Gladys Metcalf DeWeese and husband Bobby of Barnardsville, N.C.; two sons, Richard Metcalf of Weaverville, N.C. and Ronald Metcalf of Barnardsville, N.C.; six brothers, Ulysses, Jacob, Tony and Herbert Metcalf of Flag Pond, Tennessee, and Bart Metcalf of Mars Hill, N.C.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, February 4, 1975 at West Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Hansel Hensley and Lloyd Ponder officiating. Burial was in State Line Cemetery aka Divide Cemetery. Pallbearers were Glen, Billy, Riley, George and Earl Metcalf and Romas Crain.
